Criticized

January 31st, 2010

When we are feeling criticized or attacked, it may be difficult for us to recover ourselves so that we can continue to speak and act our truth. This is when we would do well to remember the old saying about letting certain things roll off us, like water off a duck’s back. Read the rest of this entry »

Weaknesses

January 31st, 2010

Usually, the weakness we see and criticize in others (and find most difficult to accept or forgive) are those things about which we have not forgiven ourselves, or in which we most fear being deficient. Look at what angers you in others. Look at the kind of person you just can’t abide, and you will likely see something in yourself that you have been unable to forgive.

Letting go of our denial and facing the truth about ourselves is a fearful step.

Reaching Your Goals

January 31st, 2010

Sometimes our goals are easily reached but other times we need stamina resourcefulness and commitment to reach them. We have to “stick our necks out” to make progress. Read the rest of this entry »

Real Heroes

January 31st, 2010

I never got to be the hometown, high school football hero. It was always a dream of mine when I was a boy. I really didn’t want to be the star of the team. I just wanted to be the kid that came off the bench and made the one big play that wins the game. It was not to be, however. In spite of running, lifting weights, staying in shape, and always trying my best my football career never made it beyond Junior Varsity. I guess God wanted me to learn early on that real heroes aren’t just found on the football field. They are found everywhere. Read the rest of this entry »

Feelings In Place?

January 31st, 2010

When parents ask their children to do the chores, the children often refuse because they don’t feel like it. As adults, we sometimes take the same position. We cannot bring ourselves to begin a task because we really do not feel like it. We fall into a trap. We think good feelings must precede our work. We think a lack of good feelings is an excuse for avoiding work. But what is the result? As the work piles up, depression overtakes us. Read the rest of this entry »

Changing the World

January 30th, 2010

When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn’t change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn’t change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.

Six Traits of a Healthy Family

January 30th, 2010

It takes some adjusting to live in a family. Like changing your attitudes about children and the kitchen. I used to by picky. But my philosophy now is more like Erma Bombeck’s: if it walks out of the refrigerator, let it go!

One More Thing!

January 30th, 2010

There is an answer to unsolvable situations; there is always one more thing that I can do, I can forgive!

I wish I had learned earlier about forgiveness, both giving and receiving it and the freedom of spirit it can bring. You cannot have a happy old age without it. When a situation has broken down in hurt and bitterness, and disagreement is so deep there seems no solution on earth ——- there remains forgiveness.
